四道

The Dao or road means the nirvana road; the 'four' are rather modes of progress, or stages in it:

(1) [lang id =1028]加行道 discipline or effort, i. e. progress from the [lang id =1028]三賢 and [lang id =1028]四善根 stages to that of the [lang id =1028]三學位, i. e. morality, meditation, and understanding;

(2) [lang id =1028]無間道 uninterrupted progress to the stage in which all delusion is banished;

(3) [lang id =1028]解脫道 liberaton, or freedom, reaching the state of assurance or proof and knowledge of the truth; and

(4) [lang id =1028]勝進道 surpassing progress in (sa) dhyāni-wisdom. Those four stages are also associated with those of (sa) srota-āpanna, (sa) sakṛdāgāmin, (sa) anāgāmin, and (sa) arhat.

指斷除煩惱、 證得真理的四種過程， 依此可證得涅槃之果， 為一切佛教修習方法之概括。 此四道為： 一、 加行道， 又稱方便道。 即於無間道之前， 為求斷除煩惱， 而行准備之修行。 二、 無間道， 又稱無礙道。 即直接斷除煩惱之修行， 由此可無間隔地進入解脫道。 三、 解脫道， 即已自煩惱中解脫， 證得真理， 穫得解脫之修行。 四、 勝進道， 又稱勝道、 三余道。 即於解脫道之後， 更進一步行其余之殊勝行， 而全然完成解脫；或滿足斷惑， 而作觀察之修行。 見《俱舍論》卷二十五。

四條通向涅槃的道路， 即一、 加行道， 謂先於三賢四善根位加力而行三學之位。 二、 無間道， 謂加行功德成就而發正智， 為正斷煩惱之位， 因不為惑而間隔， 故名無間道。 三、 解脫道， 無間道後而生一念之正智， 為真正證悟真理之位， 因是解脫煩惱之正智， 故名解脫道。 四、 勝進道， 解脫道之後更進一步， 為定慧增長之位。
